What am I doing this summer?

Besides taking DRAWING II online with SCAD's eLearning, I am enjoying TCM's Summer Under the Stars.  So far, I really enjoyed last Sunday's Cary Grant day, especially with a few Hitchcock thrillers involved, including my favourite To Catch a Thief.  Click here to see some artwork from me this summer.

    Happy St. Patrick's Day!

    January 20

    With respectful thanks

As I say "good night" to this busy Monday, I thoughtfully remember two of my most endearing heroes.  Two outstanding gifts from God to humankind.  A couple of brave, courageous, and honourable men who stood up for justice and what is right.  Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the most significant, sincere, and passionate fighters for human dignity, equality, and respect.  I believe Dr. King was God-inspired to combat racial discrimination and encourage a spirit of love, family, and unity among all people.  I would also like to say "thank you" to President George W. Bush, as he passes the batton later today to our new president.  President Bush truly defines courage by taking action when violent terrorists struck the United States on our soil, facing chaos with strong wisdom and resolve, and giving us a national leader to respect and admire, who never shamed us with scandal, a man of integrity and character to the very end of his second term.  God blessed us by giving us such exceptional, upright men as role models.  So with respectful thanks to Dr. King, President Bush, and to Almighty God, I wish you God's best for this new year and encourage you to say "thanks" everyday to God for all His provision and for those inspiring people who remind us to stand up for righteousness and truth.  God bless.

"I was glad when they said unto me, Let us go into the house of the LORD.  Our feet shall stand within thy gates, O Jerusalem.  Jerusalem is builded as a city that is compact together:  Whither the tribes go up, the tribes of the LORD, unto the testimony of Israel, to give thanks unto the name of the LORD.  For there are set thrones of judgment, the thrones of the house of David.  Pray for the peace of Jerusalem: they shall prosper that love thee.  Peace be within thy walls, and prosperity within thy palaces.  For my brethren and companions' sakes, I will now say, Peace be within thee.  Because of the house of the LORD our God I will seek thy good." Psalm 122 KJV

    Don't forget to vote!

    2009 NBA ALL-STAR GAME

It's time to vote for your
    NBA All-Stars again.

    A Crucial Time

Please join me in prayer for the future of the United States, that truth will be revealed, that righteousness will prevail, and that God's will be done.  My family and I are coming together for a time of prayer and fasting leading up to the Election.  I would like to encourage all Believers to do the same at what ever level you can.  It's time for us to take a stand for God and for His righteousness.  May God bless America and may He bless you.

Please take a look at this Voter Issue Guide.

    Serious thoughts on serious issues.

From someone who has inspired so many of us, this recent newsletter from Dr. Dobson shares some insights on the present condition of the U.S.  Few people have done more to encourage, strengthen, and build strong, loving families.  His thoughts matter to me, and I hope that you will take a serious look at them too.  It's well worth the time.

    Better together!

I've been saying for years how troubling segregation in churches is to me.  It's the plan of the enemy to divide us.  I was encouraged to read from someone else who agrees and is doing what they can to fight that kind of behaviour!  Please check out this article at ChristianityToday.com.

    What are the fruits?

I received an interesting email this week, that read:
I've not decided on who I will vote for yet.  But, I see the Republicans use morals as just a way to obtain votes and then don't backup it up with actions.
    Here's my response:
Republicans are using morals to obtain votes?...I think the Democrats should work harder then on using morals to obtain votes...because, right now they sure aren't securing my vote, as a ChristianMorals, virtue, righteousness, ethics all matter more to me than any of the other issues in the campaigns.  I think they should for all children of God--He calls us to righteousness, just as He Himself is righteous (if we wanted to be identified with Him).  When Israel obeyed God (and that was a country with some very strict morals set by God), He blessed and prospered them--and all the other countries knew about it too.  When they turned from God, and started participating in idol worship and sexual immorality (amongst other sins)...what happened?  Destruction and captivity.  Is that what we want for the U.S.?  Allow leaders who promote and honour homosexuality, killing unborn babies, and cloning (disrespect for God the Creator) to come to power...we'd be asking for trouble.
My friend also mentioned concern about not knowing who the "wolf in sheep's clothing" may be.  Let's take a look at Matthew 7:13-29, shall we?
Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it.

Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.  Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?  Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit.  A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit.  Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire.  Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven.  Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works?  And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Therefore whosoever heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them, I will liken him unto a wise man, which built his house upon a rock: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded upon a rock.  And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his house upon the sand: And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

And it came to pass, when Jesus had ended these sayings, the people were astonished at his doctrine: For he taught them as one having authority, and not as the scribes.  (KJV)

    Here's what happened...

I think a lot of you know by now that Dr. Jess and I were in a car accident Sunday afternoon, the 7th of September, while driving home from church.  As my Dad put it, "...Jennifer and Jessica on the way home from church driving along the road on Golf Course Dr. Sea Breeze going toward Prince Charles Dr. that a car pulled out of a side road in front of them, and although Jennifer tried to avoid the car she was to close to the corner when the car pulled out, thus an accident.  Thank God no one was seriously injured."  And I can seriously testify to that.  I believe it is a miracle that no one was hurt.  If you don't believe me...check out these photos.  Thank you to everyone who has been praying for us!  (I wouldn't mind continued prayers...I've got no wheels now. Crying)

    It's time for plain talk...

In my last blog entry, I encouraged you to exercise your right to vote...and do so according to your convictions.  I had a divinely appointed encounter today that has made me realise that I need to also encourage your to look at what your convictions are and to check to see if you're actually supporting a candidate based on these convictions.

As I before mentioned in a comment to my last entry, WashingtonPost.com has a feature right now for you to look at the candidates' stand on crucial issues, such as abortion, gay marriage, and stem cell cloning.  Some of these are specific moral issues that we are obligated to look at.  What do you believe?  Are you supporting someone who does not stand with your beliefs...do they actually stand in complete opposition?

    It's also your responsibility not to support or stand with someone whose morals differ from those presented to us by God.  Do you want our country to be lead by someone with warped morals or who will take our country into further moral ambiguity?  Take a look at these verses and compare it with where the candidates stand on specific issues:  1 Corinthians 6:9, 10;  Leviticus 18:22; Isaiah 49:1, 5; Jeremiah 1:5; Exodus 20:13; Numbers 35:30; Genesis 1:27;

Today I had a God-orchestrated confrontation...with a Christian leader in the Bahamian community, a man I have come to respect and admire because his acts of service speak louder than words.  However, today, his T-shirt was speaking louder than anything.  My family had been discussing how important the upcoming election is, and why we have the obligation to vote for a candidate who stands for the same values that we do.  Moments later, we came in contact with this man who was a long-time friend of my parents...he wore a shirt advertising a certain U.S. political candidate, whose campaign goes in stark contrast to Christian values.

After a long talk, I came to the decision that it is important for me to say something with regards to what kind of convictions we should have about who to vote for.  One candidate may be exciting, good-looking, and charismatic, but we must carefully analyze his platform.  What does he say he will do if he takes office in regards to abortion and gay marriage?  If you don't think you need to be concerned about these things...please look at the verses above.  God is concerned about them.

This Christian leader who we spoke with today proposed a story about taking a airplane flight with a pilot who as a Spirit-filled Christian knows nothing about flying or with a pilot with years of experience who, though extremely qualified, is a sinful scoundrel.  Who would you pick?  My thoughts...pick someone qualified for the job, but if we are to compare flying a plane with piloting the future of a country, moral standards and experience are the qualifications for flying!  If his values are corrupt, he's just not fit to lead the nation.  If he agrees with sin, he will steer the government of the country the same way.  Proverbs 14:34 says, "Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people." (KJV)

Please continue to pray for God's will and the salvation of both candidates.  Also, vote according to Christian convictions...choose a candidate whose platform best aligns itself with godly principles (We know neither candidate is perfect, but no one is).  It's your duty as a citizen of the U.S. and of God's Kingdom.

Exercise your right to vote--do it responsibly!

Voting is a privilege that not every nation offers.  It's a gift that any responsible individual cannot take for granted.  If you are a citizen of country that grants you this freedom, I strongly encourage you to exercise this right!

If you are a citizen of the United States of America, do your duty this November and go to the polls (or send in an absentee ballot if you live outside the U.S. like me) and vote according to your convictions.  I implore my fellow Americans to know the issues and to use good judgment when choosing the next leader of our country.  My sister Dr. Jess reminded me this week that one of our heroes, Dr. King, dreamed of a nation where people "...will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character."  I do too.

President Bush is another one of my heroes!

    Let the games begin!

As usual, I really only care about basketball.  However, since the Bahamas doesn't have a basketball team at the Olympics, I guess I care about track too.  You know I'm such a big fan of Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (see my photos). I'm really pulling for Argentina because two Spurs are playing for them.  Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto.  Okay, so they did loose their first gameEmbarrassed  It ain't over yet.  And they look so cool!

What I went to see this summer...

Okay, so I actually liked The Dark Knight.  Everyone who really knows me, well, knows that my teenage years revolved around my hero-worship of Batman.  I lived and breathed Batman.  Because of that fact, I have pretty strict criteria for anything bearing the name of Bob Kane’s historic creation.  I wasn't sure what to think when I first found out that Reign of Fire’s Christian Bale was the new Batman back in 2004.  I was terribly disappointed with Batman Begins—with the mispronunciation of Ra’s Al Ghul’s name (I actually was excited by The Phantom Menace’s Liam Neeson playing one of my favourite Batman opponents--I love the way he calls Batman “Detective”) and the character distortions of Bruce wielding a gun and blaming himself for his parents’ death.  Excuse me--WHAT? That just wasn’t Bruce at all.  Oh, and did he need a new girlfriend?  Please.

I told Jess I wasn’t going to see The Dark Knight.  I didn’t need to see anymore garbage about my former idol.  But I went to take a break from life and work, and surprise!—it was actually pretty interesting.  There was definitely a few flaws:  Harvey Dent and Bruce not being old friends (but they’d made the girl that) and Joker wearing makeup Sarcastic.  I enjoyed the cinematic style and artistic backdrop of the film…the darkness of the comics and the animated series mixed with realistic skyscrapers and the industrial landscape that major cities have today.  I appreciated that the horror which portrayed one of fiction’s most baffling and disturbing villains was kept to a point that the filmmakers didn’t have to show us the grisly details to suggest it.  That’s sort of classy...sort of.  I thought the story was pretty decent and true to the well-known characters.  I really loved the way Bruce saved that guy’s life near the end of the film (I won’t give any spoilers)—but it was so true to his character.  Watch "Be a Clown" or "Eternal Youth" for some more fun Bruce being Bruce moments.  Also check out this interesting article on MSN.

On the other hand, I had some big expectations for I Want to Believe, which was just disappointing.  According to an article at the Sci-Fi Wire, Chris Carter accomplished exactly what he wanted to with the film—exploring the Mulder and Scully’s life and relationship after The X-files and without a lot of paranormal—except for the lack of happy fans.

Exciting times are over...what can I say?

Okay, there's probably good stuff to come.  BUT losing Brent Barry just can't be one of them. Sad
I hope we can hold on to Horry and Finley.  I hate seeing the team split up.

What's happening to me right now?  I'm not going to SCAD in August... maybe January or March.  In the mean time, I'm keeping busy with my day job, which is also my night job, and my weekend job.  Open-mouthed  SBDC'08 is almost here.  We're going to make a splash!

    Exciting Times!

Yesterday was an exciting day for me!  I went to see a midnight showing of Prince Caspian, and when I came back to the room, I discovered that "Timmy and those" had forced a game 7 with the New Orleans Hornets.  I also just had a cup of coffeeCoffee cup so I really can barely keep still to type this up.  Oh the joy!  God is so great!  I have also gotten over the stuffy congestion that I've had for the last two weeks!  Yea! Party

How did I feel about the new Narnia film?  Well, being a Narnian myself (Open-mouthed!), I was a bit disappointed with the straying away from the original story.  Some of these deviations I considered understandable, especially since Caspian may be the slowest of the seven books.  I mean, filmmakers have to move it along at a quicker pace for viewers.  However, I also found several changes to be inexcusable.  Particularly, the High King Peter’s un-kingly like conduct in the railway station and in his confrontations with Caspian.  Peter wasn’t quarrelsome or easily provoked into physical violence like the new movie portrayed.  Obviously, they wanted to play up William Moseley and Anna Popplewell‘s roles since we won’t be seeing them in a while, and made them a little more conformed to the character of typical young people today.  My other main bicker with the film was Susan’s flirtation with Caspian—did it have to end with a kiss!  How un-kosher!  It totally doesn’t become either one of these royals to be behaving in such undignified fashion…especially since Caspian later goes on to marry, and Susan has her own problems.  They never meet again.  Gross!  What would Rilian think?  And strangely enough, Aslan never scolded the children for any of this behaviour.

Anyway, I'm still very hopeful for Dawn Treader, which has so much going on, I don't think there's much need for creating wandering fillers.
