    Let the games begin!

As usual, I really only care about basketball.  However, since the Bahamas doesn't have a basketball team at the Olympics, I guess I care about track too.  You know I'm such a big fan of Debbie Ferguson-McKenzie (see my photos). I'm really pulling for Argentina because two Spurs are playing for them.  Manu Ginobili and Fabricio Oberto.  Okay, so they did loose their first gameEmbarrassed  It ain't over yet.  And they look so cool!

What I went to see this summer...

Okay, so I actually liked The Dark Knight.  Everyone who really knows me, well, knows that my teenage years revolved around my hero-worship of Batman.  I lived and breathed Batman.  Because of that fact, I have pretty strict criteria for anything bearing the name of Bob Kane’s historic creation.  I wasn't sure what to think when I first found out that Reign of Fire’s Christian Bale was the new Batman back in 2004.  I was terribly disappointed with Batman Begins—with the mispronunciation of Ra’s Al Ghul’s name (I actually was excited by The Phantom Menace’s Liam Neeson playing one of my favourite Batman opponents--I love the way he calls Batman “Detective”) and the character distortions of Bruce wielding a gun and blaming himself for his parents’ death.  Excuse me--WHAT? That just wasn’t Bruce at all.  Oh, and did he need a new girlfriend?  Please.

I told Jess I wasn’t going to see The Dark Knight.  I didn’t need to see anymore garbage about my former idol.  But I went to take a break from life and work, and surprise!—it was actually pretty interesting.  There was definitely a few flaws:  Harvey Dent and Bruce not being old friends (but they’d made the girl that) and Joker wearing makeup Sarcastic.  I enjoyed the cinematic style and artistic backdrop of the film…the darkness of the comics and the animated series mixed with realistic skyscrapers and the industrial landscape that major cities have today.  I appreciated that the horror which portrayed one of fiction’s most baffling and disturbing villains was kept to a point that the filmmakers didn’t have to show us the grisly details to suggest it.  That’s sort of classy...sort of.  I thought the story was pretty decent and true to the well-known characters.  I really loved the way Bruce saved that guy’s life near the end of the film (I won’t give any spoilers)—but it was so true to his character.  Watch "Be a Clown" or "Eternal Youth" for some more fun Bruce being Bruce moments.  Also check out this interesting article on MSN.

On the other hand, I had some big expectations for I Want to Believe, which was just disappointing.  According to an article at the Sci-Fi Wire, Chris Carter accomplished exactly what he wanted to with the film—exploring the Mulder and Scully’s life and relationship after The X-files and without a lot of paranormal—except for the lack of happy fans.
